MacTaggart Scott are recruiting for a Business Planner to work within our Business Planning department.


This role reports directly into the Business Planning Manager. The purpose of the role is to be responsible for processing all types of production demand through MRP/PMRP using our ERP system and for high-level planning and scheduling of major projects and bids to ensure a valid operating plan for the business.  

Duties will include:

  • Oversee the explosion of demand through the system using Project Material Planning, Material Requirements Planning and Order Point Planning (PMRP / MRP / OPP).
  • Communicating with and where necessary coordinating various departments involved in the supply & demand process to ensure validity & data integrity of the overall schedule.
  • Maintain IFS calendars and business planning schedule tasks.
  • Review inventory availability and risk to support high-level production schedules.
  • Create and structure schedules and project timelines for bid prospects. Communicate with stakeholders to define the work breakdown structure, identify deliverables, define logic and durations, and schedule risk.
  • Contribute to bid approval and project handover meetings by presenting schedule and communicating the plan, critical path and schedule risks.
  • Input schedules in MS project and transfer into our ERP system. Input system data in preparation for project handover i.e. responsible ID’s, activity classes, invoice milestones etc.
  • Support bids in creating milestone payment plans.
  • Develop resource profiles for bid prospects to assist with RCCP planning and mature the profiles as they progress through the bid process to improve their accuracy.
  • Highlighting potential resource overloads and recommending scheduling and re-scheduling actions (what-if scenarios) to keep plans valid. (Working with the Business Planning Manager).
  • Investigate and monitor IFS functionality for use and potential benefits to the business, such as Project Deliverables and MRP netting groups, and provide training and phase into practice as required.

Essential skills, experience and knowledge requirements:

The successful candidate must have;

  • Experience of working in a production/planning role with responsibility for the management of information.
  • Experience of managing stakeholder engagement, taking part in meetings and actively encouraging involvement, documenting minutes, publishing reports and updating information stored on shared files.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office packages.  Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build strong internal working relationships across departments.
  • Will have good organisation skills with the ability to prioritise effectively and complete tasks to deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to seek resources when required.
  • Be committed to teamwork and able to work co-operatively and supportively as a team member.
  • Strong proactive approach.
  • Ability to drive process improvement.

Will have a BSc or BEng in Mechanical Engineering or have served an Apprenticeship with HNC or equivalent qualification

The successful candidate must hold or be able to meet the appropriate Security Clearance as required.
